“Wooden Spools”
13-1/2" x 11"
(2010). Original design.
Cotton fabric, cotton threads, fusible web, interfacing, cotton batting, acrylic paint. Thread sketched, free-motion machine quilted.

This is a study in using thread to add dimension. The spools were created with fused fabric, and the thread adds detail, shadows and highlights. After I stitched this piece, I painted the upper part of the background a darker pink with acrylic paint.

I created this piece as a sample for an article I wrote for the August/September 2010 issue of Quilting Arts magazine called “Thread Sketching 101, Lesson 4: Focus on Dimension.”
