This piece celebrates a phenomenon observed only two places in the world -- southeast Asia, and the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Here, certain species of fireflies (also called lightning bugs) light up and turn off at the same time --- about every six seconds -- during a few weeks each summer.

The idea of synchronized fireflies got me thinking about synchronized swimmers, and I decided to make a piece with fireflies that were both synchronous and snychronized. Hence, the fireflies -- as well as the grass -- are as carefully arranged as the synchronized swimming teams one sees in the Olympics.
