“I Didn’t Know Roses Had Hips”
8" x 9-1/2"
(2010). Original design.
Cotton fabric, cotton threads, fusible web, interfacing, cotton batting. Thread sketched, free-motion machine quilted.

This is a study, based on an original photo, in using thread to add dimension. All of the pieces were fused down on the dark green background fabric, then thread sketched. The name is a comment from my 10-year-old daughter upon viewing the finished piece and asking, “What are those red things supposed to be?”

I created this piece as a sample for an article I wrote for the August/September 2010 issue of Quilting Arts magazine called “Thread Sketching 101, Lesson 4: Focus on Dimension.”
