“Hope is the Thing”
36" x 48"
(2011). Original design.
Cotton fabric, acrylic textile paint, cotton threads, cotton batting. Free-motion machine quilted.

I started this piece the morning my mother died, and it has come to represent the space between us now that she is gone. Originally, I planned this piece to represent the phenomenon in which birds maintain their body heat: by trapping and heating the air in the space between their feathers. Now, it reminds me of one of my mother’s favorite poems by Emily Dickinson that begins “Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul,/And sings the tune – without the words,/And never stops at all.”

This piece was juried into “The Space Between,” an exhibition curated by Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison for Dinner at Eight Artists. It debuted at International Quilt Festival – Long Beach in July 2011, went to International Quilt Festival – Houston in November 2011, and will be shown at International Quilt Festival – Cincinnati in 2012.
