“Teach Me to Hear
Mermaids Singing”
51" x 51" (2006).
Original design.
Batiks, hand-dyed cottons, tulle, cotton and rayon threads, cotton batting. Thread sketched and machine quilted.

I started this quilt after painting the face during a class taught
by Bonnie McCaffery (www.bonniemccaffery.com). The rest of the quilt is made up of tiny fabric pieces positioned under tulle, then heavily embellished with machine thread painting. (See detail shot of turtle below.) Bias strips form the leading in the window, and are the only part of this quilt done by hand.

This quilt was selected as one of 50 finalists in the 2006 Husqvarna Viking competition “MasterPieces: Imagine That!” It was first shown at the 2006 International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, and was exhibited throughout 2007-9 in 2009 International Quilt Festival/Long Beach; Denmark; Australia: Finland: International Quilt Festival/Chicago: Sweden; and 2007 Festival of Quilts/Birmingham, England.
